Field trial of AI-enabled lightning forecasting and reduction technology in B.C.
The Government of British Columbia announced that it is investing up to $1 million through the Integrated Marketplace to support a partnership between Abbotsford-based Fast Air and Richmond-based Holinova to test a mobile battery and solar power system for general aviation. The project will replace diesel-powered backup generators with cleaner battery storage to help keep wildfire response, medical transport and search-and-rescue aircraft operating during power outages and emergencies. The initiative is the second project under the Forestry Innovation and Emergency Management Testbed and supports the Province’s Look West strategy to grow B.C.’s technology, aerospace and clean-energy sectors.
B.C. opens Metro Vancouver’s first net-zero-emission school
The Government of British Columbia and BC Hydro announced the opening of École Snokomish Elementary, Metro Vancouver’s first all-electric, net-zero-emission school and BC Hydro’s newest Power Smart Champion. Supported by CleanBC funding and BC Hydro technical expertise, the project is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 89% over 15 years, avoiding an estimated 961 tonnes of emissions. The school showcases BC Hydro’s Power Smart 2.0 initiative, demonstrating how energy-efficient, all-electric public infrastructure can help reduce emissions while meeting the province’s growing demand for clean electricity.
