Shakir brings over 10 years of experience in politics, the private sector, and consulting to his work at Earnscliffe. As a strategic communicator, campaign strategist, and government affairs expert, Shakir helps his clients navigate complex legislative, regulatory and policy issues while ensuring their voices are heard by policymakers.
Prior to consulting, Shakir acted as an advisor to federal and provincial governments. He began his career on Parliament Hill in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) before becoming a policy advisor to the federal Minister of International Trade. During his time at Queen’s Park, Shakir led policy development on priority policy files such as, infrastructure, transportation, municipal affairs and housing for two Leaders of the Official Opposition. His private sector experience includes serving as Manager of Public Policy at a major telecommunications company.
A highly sought-after political commentator, Shakir provides regular analysis for television, radio and print, contributing as a columnist with the National Post. He is a weekly panelist on CBC’s Power and Politics, and has been featured on CBC’s Metro Morning and The House. Shakir holds board positions with The Empire Club of Canada, The Walrus, and Elephant Thoughts.
As an advocate for the Black community, Shakir is passionate about mentoring Black youth with an interest in politics and public affairs. He holds two Masters’ degrees from Western University and pursued his Ph.D. in Canada-China relations at Carleton University.
